Visit the Bizkaia Bridge
Bizkaia Bridge, more popularly known as the Hanging Bridge, is the most outstanding representative of the industrial era and one of Euskadi’s most renowned icons. Its main function is to connect the two banks of the Nervion Estuary between Portugalete and Getxo. Getxo.
A work by Alberto Palacio with technical assistance from Fernando Arnodín.
Declared a World Heritage site on 13th July 2006, it is the oldest shuttle bridge in world and bears direct witness to Bizkaia’s most recent history. For the UNESCO it is “an exceptional expression of creativity, perfectly blending its functionality and aesthetic beauty”.
Here you have 3 ways of enjoying the Bridge and crossing the estuary:

- BOAT
The walk along the river mouth then continues until we reach the Churruca Monument where the Paseo de las Grandes Villas (The Big Villas Promenade) begins.

Go up to the pedestrian walkway in the panoramic lift (50 m high) and you will enjoy some extraordinary views taking in the entire Nervión river mouth, Bilbao Port, the adjacent mountains, Portugalete and Getxo. * If you don’t want to miss the slightest detail, contract the audioguide service.

2024 - From 1st November:
Getxo Lift: open every day from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 16.00 to 19.00.
Getxo shop: open every day from 10.00 to 14.00 and from 16.00 to 20.00.
Portugalete lift: will remain closed although it might be open on some days.
Portugalete shop: open every day from 10.00 to 14.30 and from 16.30 to 20.00.
2024- From Easter:
Getxo lift and shop: open every day from 10.00 to 20.00.
PRICES (2024):
Walkway: €10 / €7,50 (5-15 years & +65)
Audioguide: €2,50 (Spanish / Basque / English / French).
- GONDOLA
Cross the bridge on the gondola, hanging from a 25-metre long, 36-wheel carriage which moves along the rails of the horizontal sleeper. Today’s gondola is the fifth and it dates from 1998.

The boats or gasolinos that cross the Nervión estuary (Getxo – Portugalete) have been witnesses of the Bizkaia Bridge. Back in 1900, there were rowing boats able to carry up to 14 people. €0.50/ Person
