Imagine strolling through the streets of Getxo and spotting a giant photograph hanging from the side of a building. Or crossing a square and seeing an image projected onto a wall. That’s Getxophoto - an international photography festival that turns the urban landscape into one big open-air gallery.
Every year, the festival welcomes visual artists from around the world who want to share their work and help transform every corner of the town into a vibrant visual and cultural experience.
Getxophoto takes place every June and was launched back in 2007 as a themed festival focused on contemporary imagery. It’s all about using unexpected spaces, like façades, shop windows, bars, courtyards, even containers, to bring art closer to everyone and turn the city into a shared cultural space.
Exhibitions, routes and experiences for everyone
Getxophoto isn’t just about looking at photography, it’s about experiencing it. It’s about exploring, discovering, and getting involved.
Over the course of several weeks, the Getxophoto brings you:

Getxophoto 2025 REC
The next edition of Getxophoto 2025, coming in 2025, is all about REC, an open invitation to dive into how we record, capture, and share our everyday lives. This year’s theme will be explored from all kinds of angles, through the work of renowned contemporary visual artists.
Once again, the festival will take over both the urban and natural spaces of Getxo, bringing bold, creative projects that explore what it means to make images in the digital age, and the power of our devices as tools for creating.
