Cinema Getxo

Getxo has established itself in recent years as a highly attractive natural and urban stage for the audiovisual sector. Its coastline, its architecture, its cultural spaces and its distinct identity have served as film sets for national and international films, series and television programmes, making the municipality a benchmark for film tourism in Bizkaia and the Basque Country.

Thanks to the close collaboration between the Getxo City Council and the Bilbao Bizkaia Film Commission public service, audiovisual productions are increasingly choosing Bilbao-Bizkaia as locations to promote their projects.

This page brings together the main productions filmed in Getxo, identifying those where the municipality is clearly recognisable and highlighting the real spaces where key scenes were recorded.

Filming in Getxo: when landscape becomes history

Getxo's locations have made it possible to recreate everything from literary tales and historical dramas to psychological thrillers, romantic comedies and large-scale international productions. In some cases, the municipality appears explicitly; in others, its spaces are transformed to bring other places in the world to life.

This journey through Cinema Getxo allows you to discover how the same territory can become many different stages.

Getxo in cinema based on the work of Ramiro Pinilla

The Bastards’ Fig Tree

Shot between 2014 and 2016, 95% of the feature film was recorded in Getxo, making the municipality an essential element of the narrative. The film brings to the screen Ramiro Pinilla's literary universe, deeply linked to local history and identity. Directed by Ana Murugarren, it features actors such as Karra Elejalde.

The Blind Ants

Another adaptation of the author's work, with scenes shot in La Galea, including storm sequences that received wide media coverage. Part of the filming took place on a set in Bilbao, but the landscape of Getxo is key to the storytelling.

The Getxo Tourist Office organises two guided tours a year centred on Ramiro Pinilla and the real settings of his novels.

Recognisable spaces in Getxo in films and series

Bizkaia Bridge and maritime surroundings

One of the most recognisable icons of Getxo appears in several audiovisual productions, especially in international shoots.

  • The Price You Pay / Kill Jackie (2025), starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, with scenes at the Bizkaia Bridge, the maritime area, Las Arenas and Romo.
  • 30 Coins (HBO, second season, 2022), with a scene shot at the Arriluze dock featuring Álex de la Iglesia.
  • Appearances in other productions where the bridge acts as a visual signature of the municipality.

Muxikebarri as a Cinematic Space

  • Not Such an Easy Life (filmed in 2021, released in 2023), where Muxikebarri recreates a modern architecture studio.
  • The Talent (El talento), starring Ester Expósito.
  • Detective Touré (2023), with interior and exterior scenes in Algorta.

Azkorri Beach and La Galea: landscapes that travel in time

  • Sin Límites (Amazon Prime Video, 2021–2022): Azkorri Beach recreates the arrival of Magellan on the American continent.
  • Los Honores (2019), shot in the surroundings of Azkorri, including the cement benches of the promenade and the exterior of the Fadura Sports Centre.

The Old Port

The Old Port of Algorta has been the setting for several audiovisual productions thanks to its seafaring character and strong visual identity. Filming in this environment includes titles such as The Bastards’ Fig Tree, Barcelona, mi amor and Querer, among others.

Films and series shot in interiors and homes in Getxo

In other productions, Getxo acts as a real stage, although it is not always recognisable to the viewer:

  • I Can’t Live Without You (2023), starring Paz Vega, filmed in a villa in La Galea.
  • McMansion (El Casoplón), with Pablo Chiapella.
  • 8, a feature film directed by Julio Medem.
  • Babies Don’t Come with Instructions (Sin instrucciones), starring Paco León.
  • Querer and Los domingos, directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, who has repeatedly filmed in the municipality.

Interior filming locations

The Cemetery and City Hall in fiction

  • El Silencio (Muted), Netflix, created by Aitor Gabilondo, includes scenes filmed in the Getxo Cemetery.

  • Soy Nevenka (I Am Nevenka), directed by Icíar Bollaín, uses the Getxo Town Hall to recreate Ponferrada’s city hall.

Getxo in international television programmes

Getxo has also been the protagonist of high-audience television formats internationally.

        • German programme Wunderschön! (WDR), one of the most-watched travel shows on German television, with an approximate audience of 900,000 viewers. The episode dedicated to the Atlantic coast aired in July 2022 and dedicates more than a minute to Getxo.

Film tourism in Getxo

The productions filmed in Getxo show the versatility of the municipality as a set, capable of transforming into other places and eras without losing its identity. Touring these spaces is also a different way to get to know Getxo.

This page will continue to grow with new productions and proposals to discover Getxo through film and television.
