GetxoJazz
Every July Getxo fills with swing, jam sessions and some of the great jazz artists of today thanks to the popular open air festival known as Getxo Jazz.
The Getxo International Jazz Festival kicks off the jazz festival season in Euskadi. In early July, there are concerts by acknowledged figures from the international jazz scene held at different venues around the town. Its aim: To try to encompass the world’s best jazz seeking, in turn, to be the Festival of Discovery of new artists of the future.
The main venue is located in Muxikebarri, Getxo Art, Culture and Congress Center, in Av Basagoiti , 77.
Apart from these concerts, there are also performances in the groups contest and the “Tercer Milenio” (Third Millennium) section to support younger musicians, together with Jam Sessions and concerts for all the family. Hence the festival is split into four different blocks:
-
Concerts by consecrated artists
-
Third Millennium section and the Groups Contest
-
Concerts for all the family
-
Jam Sessions

History
Getxo Jazz began in 1975 as a small, low budget event held in the Old Port organised by the San Ignacio Festivities Committee. Despite being an amateur organisation, its drive and will led this festival to grow and reap increasing success year after year. Suffice to mention that a young Sting performed at the festival back when he was part of the group LAST EXIT.
Ten years later, in the 1980’s, Getxo Jazz began to acquire its hallmarks. In 1985 it became part of the Getxo Cultural Activities project and in 1986 the state-wide Groups Contest was included into the jazz festival. It began to have a bigger budget which led to the participation of giants from the jazz world (Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Freddie Hubbard...).
Since then, we have seen great international jazz musicians.
