12 Miles: The Shipwrecks off the Bizkaia Coast
12 Miles: The Shipwrecks off the Bizkaia Coast

Sail through the history of the Bizkaia coastline
Embark on a historical sailing experience along the Basque and Bizkaia coastlines, where the Cantabrian Sea became the stage for events during the First and Second World Wars.
The voyage passes through El Abra de Getxo, a strategic enclave which, despite the State’s official neutrality, witnessed international tensions, naval movements and the pursuit of merchant ships. On board, a specialist skipper-guide brings these episodes to life in an entertaining yet rigorous manner, connecting global history with the present-day coastal landscape.
The tour symbolically enters the 12-nautical-mile zone, where little-known sinkings and confrontations took place during both conflicts. The cliffs of La Galea help illustrate the relationship between the territory, the sea and war, serving as a backdrop for reflecting on our underwater cultural heritage.
The experience concludes with an introduction to the 12 Miles Project, which focuses on the research and conservation of shipwrecks off the Bizkaia coast. A cultural tourism initiative in Getxo that invites you to discover the coastline from the sea and hear the stories it still harbours.
