Bilbao
Bilbao , the capital of Bizkaia, is the city closest to Getxo, linked by a comfortable motorway which leaves us in the city centre in just twelve minutes.
Bilbao is a compulsory trip because it has become a city that lives for its visitors. Bars and restaurants with delicious pintxos and tapas make Bilbao a gastronomy capital and not just one of culture. A centre for leisure, you can’t miss visiting Bilbao Old Town, with its totally international atmosphere.
By contrast to the peace and quiet in Getxo, Bilbao is a high-speed city; tourism moves untiringly, that is why many visitors prefer a walk beside the sea or a coffee on a quiet terrace in Algorta Old Port at the end of the day.
The hustle and bustle of the city, its numerous museums and cultural options make Bilbao a highly attractive city but rather unapt for resting after a long day touring its streets. Visit Bilbao, there is lots to see, but afterwards come back to the peace and quiet of our streets, where things happen at a different pace, much more harmonious and suitable for resting.
What is there to see in Bilbao?
If you only have one day, we recommend you take the Metro and get off at Abando Station, there you can take in the marvellous stained-glass window, a feature of the Indalecio Prieto railway station (Abando). On your way out you will find the Bilbao Tourist Information Office, a recently created but nevertheless true work of art. From there we recommend you take a stroll along Gran Vía until you reach Plaza Moyúa square. Along the way, you will see the Provincial Council House and in Plaza Moyúa the Carlton Hotel or the Chávarri Mansion House.
From there you can head towards the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, which houses great pictorial works or directly to the Guggenheim Museum, the City of Bilbao’s current icon.
Strolling slowly along the bank of the estuary we come to Bilbao City Hall and from there, right into Bilbao Old Town. Although it is impossible not to lose oneself among its alleyways, always full of surprises and stops along the way, Plaza Nueva square is the culinary reference point in terms of pintxos.
There are, of course, many more buildings, many more museums and many more options to see and do in Bilbao, but this route we recommend you to take here is a good getaway for spending a full day in the city.
Thanks to the shuttle service to Bilbao, you can reach the capital of Bizkaia from Getxo in 25 minutes
