26th edition of European Heritage Days 2026 in Getxo: a month to rediscover and cherish our heritage

During the month of October 2026, Getxo will once again be taking part in the European Heritage Days (EHD) with a programme of 19 activities under the slogan Gure eskuetan: Reframe, Preserve and Include. Tours, visits, workshops and talks will enable visitors to discover the municipality’s natural, historical, architectural, industrial and intangible heritage, and to gain an insight into the stories and traditions that form part of its identity.

1. Placenames and the development of historic neighbourhoods

Placenames allow us to trace the history of Getxo through the names that have survived the transformation of its neighbourhoods. This section aims to explore how places such as Andra Mari, Neguri, the Old Port of Algorta and Las Arenas came into being and evolved, bringing to light ancient landscapes, ways of life and features that help us to understand the municipality’s identity.

2. Natural, geological and industrial heritage

Getxo’s coastline, wetlands and other natural areas retain numerous traces of its past. The activities in this section introduce the public to the geology, biodiversity and industrial heritage of the municipality, while highlighting the fragility of these environments and the measures needed to promote their conservation and restoration.

3. El Abra, the Punta Begoña Galleries and the technological future

The Punta Begoña Galleries are set to be one of the main venues for this event, offering an opportunity to explore the challenges involved in the conservation of architectural heritage. This section combines history, architecture and new technologies to showcase the research and restoration work carried out on the site, bring to light some of the stories of the place, and explore new tools for documenting and preserving our heritage.

4. Social memory, devotion and flavours under threat

Cultural heritage is also preserved through memories, traditions and knowledge passed down from generation to generation. This section highlights oral history, seafaring and religious traditions, gastronomy, funerary heritage and accessibility, showcasing different ways of safeguarding a legacy that forms part of Getxo’s everyday and social history.
