La Galea
La Galea is a beautiful coastal fringe formed by a succession of cliffs, beaches and inlets with marvellous panoramic views of the coastline. During the walk along La Galea, you will come across the following resources strategically located in the area:
-
Aixerrota Windmill: It was built because of a draught at the beginning of the 18th century. The only windmill still standing in Getxo. At its feet we have Arrigunaga Beach and the La Kantera skate park.
-
Cemetery of Nuestra Sra. Del Carmen: Built in the Bizkaia Neoclassical style, the chapels and pantheons form one of most important assemblies of funeral heritage in the province. Opening times: Monday to Sunday. 09:00 - 18:00.
-
Andra Mari Church: The first inhabitants in Getxo settled around this church back in the 12th century. Beside the church is the Guardian Angel Chapel.
-
La Galea Fort – Prince’s Castle: An interesting example of an 18th century fortification and the only one of its kind still standing in Bizkaia.
-
Faro La Galea Lighthouse: In the past, huge bonfires were built here to mark the port entrance and it was a place for sighting whales. This lighthouse was opened in 1950.
-
Gorrondatxe/Azkorri beach: This Beach holds a “Golden nail”, an award distinguishing sites that are particularly singular in terms of their stratigraphic properties.
-
Barinatxe/La Salvaje beach: This beach lies under high cliffs, thus providing free flight fans with the perfect place to practise paragliding. The beach itself also offers ideal conditions for surfers.
