A retrospective dedicated to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century

From 29 May to 12 October 2026, the museum hosts Jasper Johns: Night Driver, a major retrospective dedicated to one of the most important figures in contemporary art. The exhibition traces more than five decades of the artist’s career through paintings, works on paper and sculptures.

The exhibition brings together works created from the 1950s to the early 21st century, offering a comprehensive overview of the themes, symbols and creative processes that have characterised the work of Jasper Johns.

From pop art to conceptual art

Born in 1930 in Augusta, United States, Jasper Johns revolutionised the American art scene with works based on everyday recognisable images like flags, numbers, maps and targets. These works were precursors to the Pop Art movement and later influenced the Minimalism and Conceptual Art movements.

His work is characterised by a constant reflection on image, symbols and the very act of looking.

Throughout his career, Johns incorporated references to major figures from art history, literature and contemporary culture, constructing a complex visual universe rich in meaning.

The exhibition also devotes a prominent section to his drawings and etchings, an essential part of his artistic output that stands in itself and broadens our understanding of his work beyond painting.
